Chapter 12

Tommie

Tommie woke to a loud crash.

“Wha—?!” she cried out as she bolted upright from the dead of sleep only to realize it had been the thunderstorm that had woken her.

Sweat slicked down her brow. Tommy wiped it away with the back of her hand. It was hot and clammy, the air so humid that it felt like the cave had some kind of environment control system gone haywire. Obviously that wasn’t the case.

Fanning herself and picking at her still wet clothing, she regretted not taking Vaethys’s advice. Maybe her clothes would have dried faster if she had just taken them off.

Or maybe not. The ground’s wet too.

Just then, a bolt of lightning struck something nearby, its blinding light blazing in glory and flashing inside the cave. A series of larger, louder strikes followed.

How did I fall asleep to this?

She looked around to see if any creepy crawlies had invaded her space while she’d slept, but as she did, she realized something. The Okeadra was nowhere to be seen. He was gone.

Slightly panicked, reality chased away the remnants of her sleep.

“Vaethys?” she called out, looking around the dark, empty space.

Their conversation from the previous night replayed in her head. Did he mention he was going somewhere? Tommie hadn’t recalled, but then again, some details were foggy.

She remembered him voicing numerous complaints about her, even threatening to leave, but Tommie was certain the drakon was mostly all show. Not bite, just bark. A whole lot of bark.

She still worried about him, though. Enough that it troubled her that he had gone out without so much as a word. He’d seemed fine before she fell asleep, but maybe she had misread signs of healing for something worse.

If his state of mind is any indication… we’re screwed.

Stiff, achy muscles cried out in agony while Tommie crawled to her feet. She stood before the cave mouth, hesitant to peek her head outside. There was nowhere she could look that didn’t involve taking an ice cold shower, but what choice did she have?

Before she could change her mind, Tommie stuck her head through the downrush and called out to Vaethys several times before ultimately pulling back. He wasn’t outside, and if he was, he was either out of hearing range or he was ignoring her.

“He’d better not be ignoring me,” she muttered.

Still soaked and shivering, she scrunched her frayed uniform and squeezed out every last drop of water before returning to her spot feeling worn out and defeated. Nothing dampened a mood quite like living in a damp cave. With not much else to do but bide her time, it was hard not to reflect on recent events. But the more she did that, the more it brought up unresolved emotions.

She knew she had to deal with them sooner or later, especially if she wanted to return to A Hope for Second Chances after all this, which she did, but it was so much easier to deflect her pain and pretend that it was all fake than actually accept her new life.
